Meet The 2025 Grand Marshalls
The Cassia County Fair Board would like to recognize Denton and Virgene Darrington.
Denton Darrington was born on April 30, 1940, in Burley, Idaho, to Ila C. and Clifford H Darrington. Delivered at a birthing home under the care of Dr. L.M. Kelly, Denton was raised with strong ties to the Declo community. While in the fourth grade at the old Declo school, he made a promise to himself that he would never live anywhere but Declo—a promise he has proudly kept. Apart from brief times away for education and three decades of legislative service, Denton has called Declo home his entire life.

Virgene Lind Darrington was born on July 16, 1944, at Cooley Hospital in Brigham City, Utah. At the time, her family lived on a ranch in Lynn, Utah. She joined her parents, Philbert C. and Cora Lind, four older brothers and a sister on the ranch and was raised at the headwaters of the Raft River where she grew, along with her unusual pets–-the bees and a fawn—to name a few. When she was six, her parents bought a home in Logan, Utah to reunite the family and ensure their children could attend grade school through college in one location while living at home. The family would spend weekends traveling back to Lynn. After graduating from Logan High School, Virgene attended Utah State University.
Denton and Virgene’s paths crossed in Logan—first at her brother’s service station—then again in a record store. The connection was instant, and they married on March 22, 1963, in the Logan LDS Temple. That same spring, Denton graduated from Utah State’s College of Agriculture, and the couple purchased their dream property—the Cobbley Farm—south of Declo. Their small but comfortable home was nestled near the Darrington family homestead, with views of Declo’s East Hills and Mount Harrison. Virgene’s father delivered five cows and two horses to their doorstep—a gesture that confirmed to Denton that he had, indeed, married a “five-cow wife.” In 1976, they built their forever home on the same land.
Together, they have raised five children: Lyn (Curtis Elliott), Dee (Angie Jackson), Kim (Chris Gailey), Kae (Ty Cameron) and Matt (Amy Boehmer). Their growing family now includes grandchildren Tyler, Jackson, Jordon, Alex, Darin, Ava, Jake, Abby, Aiden, Ace, Michael and Ryan—as well as a great-grandchild, McKay.
While Denton spent 30 years serving in the Idaho State Senate, 33 years teaching 8th grade Idaho history at Burley Junior High School and 5 years serving as Bishop of the Declo and Declo 2nd wards of the LDS church, Virgene anchored the family. She was active in the Declo Domestic Duchesses Home Extension Club, served on the Declo Days Committee for 20 years, and held leadership positions in the Young Women, Relief Society, and Primary organizations of various Declo wards. She also served on the board of the Cassia County Historical Society and still remains deeply invested in her community. Together, they have attended hundreds of Declo ball games, theater performances and other community and
school events.
Denton has cherished the Cassia County Fair ever since attending his first fair with his parents in 1945. He hasn’t missed a fair since—this year marks his 81st—and he and Virgene both hope to enjoy many more.
Together, Denton and Virgene have built a life grounded in service, education, faith and a deep love for Cassia County. “We have been much blessed,” Denton writes. “Life is good, and the good times are ours to enjoy.”
